5th Annual Overdose Awareness Vigil

The Town of Scituate, Scituate FACTS Coalition, and South Shore Peer Recovery welcome all to a service on International Overdose Awareness Day, Monday, August 31, 2020 at 5:45am at the Old Scituate Lighthouse, 100 Lighthouse Road, Scituate Harbor.

The sunrise service will acknowledge police officers, firefighters, emergency room workers, treatment providers, individuals in recovery, and members of the community groups who have been working to reduce fatal overdoses and help those who still suffer.

All communities are welcome, as we remember together. We will be adapting some elements to ensure safety for all. Information on grief support, Narcan access, as well as treatment and recovery resources, will be available online (instead of paper versions). Masks and social distancing are required. Rain or shine.

Marijuana Myths & Facts Camp - A riff off last year's camp on vaping. Participants will tell us what teenagers think about cannabis. Then we will apply some "where-do-your-facts come-from" savvy to see what's what. This session includes a visit from a Scituate Police Drug Recognition Officer - and a chance to try out Weed Goggles.

Loved Ones Raising Loved Ones

Many children in Scituate are being raised by grandparents or family members other than their biological Mom and Dad.  These adults and children have unique issues that arise. This Scituate Public Schools-based support group is designed to address the issues that are common for family members raising other family member’s children, and for children being raised by loved ones other than their parents.  Support groups are a wonderful way to be with others who are in a similar situation. 

Each month, participants meet as a large group for a pizza dinner. Then, the adults and children (grouped by age) meet separately with School Counselors.  Children engage in fun gym activities or crafts designed for the various ages. The Loved Ones group meets during the school year, on the Second Tuesday of the month, from 6:00-8:00pm at Jenkins Elementary School. Children of all ages from all schools participate, including pre-school aged siblings.

This is a small group, psycho-educational support meeting for students to explore their own choices around marijuana use. In a supportive setting, students will learn strategies to make more positive choices, address adolescent issues pertaining to marijuana use, difficult decision-making, self-esteem, stress management, resiliency, goal-setting and motivation to change. Meetings are facilitated by Caron’s Student Assistance Program for 8 weeks.

The group will meet weekly during third lunch and H Block (12:44-1:39pm) on Fridays, February 14 through April 10 2020 (none during February vacation). Your child may miss some academic classes in order to participate in this group and will not be penalized. However, your child will be responsible for obtaining and completing any missed school work.  The group is a positive addition to your child’s school day.

Social Host Panel: SHS Pre Prom Event (To be rescheduled)

This special event is postponed. Thank you for your patience as we determine the best way to share this important information with Junior Prom-goers, parents and caregivers, and the entire community! Depending on the timing of the prom, part of the presentation may be shared via video! Standby!

Scituate FACTS has partnered with Scituate High School to organize a forum on this hot topic. Learn all about the Massachusetts Social Host Law, and ways that parents and other adults can work together to keep teenagers safe during prom and graduation season.

Students will present an overview of youth substance use trends in Scituate.

Then, Steve Maguire will moderate a Q&A Session with a panel of experts:
Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz
Scituate Deputy Police Chief Mark Thompson
Interim SHS Principal Dr. Lisa Maguire
Person in long-term recovery, and Director of South Shore Peer Recovery Center, Mark Mulhern

Amazing incentives will be offered for students and parent/caergivers in attendance, including:
* Free Raffles for 4 Prom Tickets, from the Friends of Scituate FACTS
* Gift Cards toward hair, make-up, tuxedo and flowers - and a Spray Tan Party for 6 from Pretty Bar!
* If enough students attend with a parent or guardian, they will earn an extra-early 11:30 am dismissal on May 8th (instead of the 1:00pm time for prom-goers).

Student athletes are all excused from team practice on this date, per AD Umbrianna! Be there!

 After school drop in program will run 2/7-3/27 from 2:40-4:30pm (except school vacation week Feb 21). School Counselor Nina Riley will lead the activities, along with Denyce Holley and youth counselors from the Recreation Department, and Scituate Police Officers. Students in grades 6-8 can enjoy crafts, pizza,/snack, gym games, ping pong, karaoke,music and more each week! Financial contributions are welcome to support this free program.
